Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Announces Resignation
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation. He made this announcement during a press conference today, Monday.
Justin Trudeau stated that he will resign from both the leadership of the party and the prime ministerial position once the party elects a new leader.
Trudeau, leader of the Liberal Party, has been serving as Canada’s Prime Minister for nine years. During the press conference, Trudeau mentioned that he made this decision after extensive discussions with his family. He acknowledged the significant role his family played in his success and shared that he informed his children about his decision to resign during a family dinner last night.
Responding to questions from journalists in Ottawa, the Canadian capital, Trudeau explained that parliamentary functions have been largely paralyzed for months due to persistent obstacles, leading to a decline in productivity. He emphasized that it is time for a fresh start to reduce the political tension in Canada.
Currently serving his third term as Prime Minister, Trudeau remarked that during this "complex" period in both domestic and international arenas, a fresh start in Parliament is necessary to guide the country in the right direction.
He has announced the suspension of Parliament sessions until March 24, during which the Liberal Party will elect a new leader.
Trudeau first became Prime Minister in 2015, representing the Liberal Party. Over nearly a decade, he has led the country, securing a third-term victory in the 2021 elections under his leadership. A new election is scheduled to take place in Canada by October 20. Trudeau has faced increasing pressure from both opposition parties and within his own party, ultimately leading to his resignation before the upcoming election.
Discussions are underway regarding Trudeau's successor. Notable candidates include former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and former central bank official Mark Carney.
Freeland resigned from her position in mid-December, intensifying the pressure on Trudeau to step down.
